Understanding The Emergency
Why This Happens — And Why Our Response Works
A seized grate during flooding is a compounding emergency: the drain below may be perfectly functional, but the rust-welded grate above renders it useless. Forcing it with the wrong tools breaks the frame, damages the surround, and often fails anyway — especially with cold, wet metal in a storm.
Our approach is methodical even under pressure: penetrating treatment for the corrosion bond, proper lifting tools that distribute force across the frame, and a controlled break of the seal. Most grates free within minutes with the right equipment — the emergency is not the difficulty, it is the timing.
Once open, the basin beneath usually tells the rest of the story — compacted silt, storm debris, sometimes years of accumulation. We clear it as part of the emergency response, because a freed grate over a clogged basin just moves the failure point down six inches.
